This rare and unusual solid sterling silver handmade panel bracelet was sourced in Paris but created around 100 years ago in Mexico! It depicts historical scenes from the ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures and would have been purchased as a souvenir by an intrepid European traveller. Each panel has been meticulously crafted and etched, telling a story of the history of Mexico.

Box clasp with safety chain.

The 19th century saw increased interest from European elites in traveling to Mexico, particularly after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. The country was seen as exotic, offering both romantic and adventurous elements. In the late 1800s, especially after the construction of railways and improved infrastructure, more Europeans, including artists, writers, and aristocrats, began visiting Mexico. In the 1920s and 1930s, the "Mexican Renaissance" began, and more bohemian travellers made their way across the ocean. In the early 20th century, Mexico became a major attraction for European and American artists, intellectuals, and writers. The Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) and the subsequent period of cultural and political change created a fascinating environment. Figures like the artist Diego Rivera, who was married to the painter Frida Kahlo, and writers like Paul Gauguin, who had lived in Tahiti, traveled to Mexico for inspiration. Mexico City, with its vibrant culture, historic landmarks, and artistic energy, became a hot spot for the avant-garde.
