An exceptionally rare antique jewelry set from the 1800s featuring beautifully carved Pompeiian volcanic lava cameos in high relief within sterling silver settings. The 7-panel multi-hued bracelet features the heads of seven goddesses, most probably Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Athena, Artemis, Hestia and Persephone. The pendant, which can also be worn as a brooch, features Hera, queen of all the gods (Roman name “Juno”). Despite their age, these pieces remain elegant and very wearable.

Lava cameo jewelry became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially during the Grand Tour era (mid-18th to late-19th centuries). Tourists visiting Italy, particularly Pompeii, purchased these cameos as souvenirs. Made from soft volcanic lava, usually in shades of gray, brown, terra-cotta or beige, the cameos were hand-carved into classical or mythological designs. They were highly fashionable in Georgian and Victorian Europe and today are valued as rare antiques.
