This lovely antique English heart-shaped MIZPAH brooch from the mid-Victorian era is inscribed with the words “The Lord watch between me & thee when we are absent from one another”. It was beautifully hand-crafted and hand-etched during the Aesthetic Movement of the mid to late-1800s with elegant forget-me-not flowers and scrolled detailing. Mizpah jewellery was generally given to a loved one during a period of absence such as distance, military service or travel. It symbolised a “forget-me-not” bond of love between two people. “Mizpah” comes from the Hebrew word for “watchtower” or “lighthouse”, helping the wearer to always find the way back home.
