This large antique French gold-filled brooch of two tulips is in remarkable condition for its age. With the curvilinear shapes typical of the era around 1900, it is still very fashionable today. Trombone clasp.
In jewelry, tulips are considered to be the symbol of perfect love, thus making them ideal as gifts for lovers, spouses, children, parents, and perfect friendships. Cultivated in Turkey c.1000 CE, the tulip has also been a symbol of the declaration of love for over one thousand years. The botanist, Carolus Clusius, introduced the tulip to Europe in the 16th century. It became grown primarily in The Netherlands where its cultivation brought massive revenue for the region. Persians also widely used tulips to signify a connection between lovers. Due to the huge sentimentality prevalent in the Victorian era, many European jewelry pieces were adorned with these beautiful flowers.
