“Slow and steady wins the race…” For the hardworking, consistent and diligent among us, this is a perfect (and perfectly whimsical) antique brooch. Based on the fables of Aesop and later Jean de la Fontaine, this carved celluloid tableau represents the beloved story of the tortoise finishing first against an egotistical hare and is utterly charming. It even features a sign next to the tortoise which says “but”, the French word for “goal”. This brooch is beautifully encircled by a gilt setting in excellent condition. What a conversation piece!
Trombone clasp.
Celluloid was a product created in the mid 1800s of cellulose dinitrate blended with pigments, fillers, camphor, and alcohol to create a realistic alternative to natural ivory. Like ivory, it could be ornately carved and molded, and was often indistinguishable to the naked eye from real ivory. Today, fine celluloid pieces from the late 1800s and early 1900s are even more collectable than ivory due to international bans on the trade of ivory and the general distaste for its origins.
