Every chatelaine deserves the romance of swans. This beautiful French brooch features a carved celluloid panel of a swan and foliage against a foiled blue-green background. The scrolled setting is gilt pinchbeck with a lovely patina.

Trombone clasp.

In literature and myth, the swan symbolizes light, purity, transformation, intuition, grace and fidelity.

Celluloid was a product created in the mid 1800s of cellulose dinitrate blended with pigments, fillers, camphor, and alcohol to create a realistic alternative to natural ivory. Like ivory, it could be ornately carved and molded, and was often indistinguishable to the naked eye from real ivory. Today, fine celluloid pieces from the late 1800s and early 1900s are even more collectable than ivory due to international bans on the trade of ivory and the general distaste for its origins.
